Low pollution septic system being installed

How long has your septic been in the ground? Time for an upgrade!

The hundreds of thousands of septic systems and cesspools in Sound shore communities are a major source of nitrogen pollution which chokes the Sound with algae and robs fish and other marine life of oxygen and habitat. Septic system technologies have vastly improved in recent years. One of the biggest advances has been the addition of processes to filter out harmful excess nitrogen. This can have a huge impact on the amount of nitrogen your home contributes to the growth of algae blooms and contamination of groundwater.

Educate yourself on the type of septic system or cesspool you have and upgrade your system to one of the Innovative and Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems now available. If you live in Suffolk County, you may be eligible for a grant to offset the cost of a new system (see the Suffolk Septic Improvement Program).
