Defend our coastlines by engaging in local development efforts.
Some local governments have created policies to limit over development in coastal areas and preserve marshes and wetlands. Check with your local planning department or Mayor’s office to find out if there are coastal protection policies in your community. If nothing exists, urge your representatives to develop them. You can find models in neighboring communities.
Pay attention to the building and development happening in your community. All building projects must go through a rigorous review process with the local planning departments and most of these offer opportunities for public comment before permits are granted (check your municipality’s Zoning Board or Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission calendars). It’s important to get involved BEFORE permits are issued, as once the permits have been granted there is little leverage to force a change of the building plans.
